This session will begin by reviewing relevant statistics and demographics associated with suicide that are believed to inform risk assessments.
Next, a variety of suicide prevention strategies will be examined followed by a discussion of the school-based assessment of and intervention with the suicidal student.
Finally, the session will conclude with a review of how to respond to the aftermath of a completed suicide.
At the conclusion of this program, participants will be able to:
1. Describe the difference between the term “suicide” and other forms of self-injury.
2. Identify important suicide statistics and demographics, and describe how these data can inform risk assessments
3. Apply at least 2 types of primary prevention strategies in a school setting
4. Discuss the pros and cons of at least 2 common suicide risk assessment strategies
5. Describe important considerations for school-based interventions with a student at risk for suicidal behavior
6. Describe at least 3 school-based response strategies to the aftermath of a completed suicide
Dr. Stephen E. Brock is the current Past-President of the National Association of School Psychologists, as well as a Professor, and the School Psychology Program Coordinator in the College of Education at California State University, Sacramento (CSUS).
Dr. Brock is the lead editor of the NASP publication Best Practices in School Crisis Prevention and Intervention (2nd ed.) and the lead author of School Crisis Prevention and Intervention: The PREPaRE Model.
Dr. Brock worked for 18 years as a school psychologist with the Lodi, CA Unified School District, including 6 years as the lead psychologist. He helped develop the district school crisis response protocol and specialized in functional behavioral assessment.
Dr. Brock’s academic work has included study of school-based crisis intervention; systems-level school crisis response; suicide prevention, intervention, and postvention; violence prevention; and threat assessment. He has over 250 publications (including 11 book titles) and over 200 invited or referred state, national, and international conference presentations.

This program is co-sponsored by NHASP and NHPA. New Hampshire Psychological Association (NHPA) is approved by the American Psychological Association to sponsor continuing education for psychologists. NHPA maintains responsibility for this program and its content. NHASP is a NASP-approved provider of CPD hours and Certificates of Attendance will be accepted toward NCSP. A total of 5.0 CE credits will be awarded for this event.
The target audience for this intermediate level workshop includes school psychologists, psychologists, social workers, school counselors, and clinical mental health counselors.
All registrations must be prepaid. Payment receipt will be sent to address provided upon request. Purchase orders will not be accepted for this event. Cancellations received prior to October 19, 2015 will be refunded less a 5% administrative fee. No refunds will be provided for cancellations received after 5pm on Monday, October 19, 2015. In case of inclement weather, notification of postponement will be made by email as soon as possible.
