Workshop Description
School psychologists are often called upon to assess the level of risk, including both risk for self-harm and threats to others, of a student in our school. Completing such a risk assessment can be a challenging and intense experience for even the most experience practitioner.
This workshop will provide the perspective of a panel of three different school psychologists on risk assessments. A balance of school based practice and consulting practice will allow for a rich discussion of the many factors involved in risk assessments. After presentations by each panel member, a work session will allow participants to focus on developing their own practice around risk assessments or develop strategies for advocating for a broader role in risk assessments in their district.
Target Audience
This workshop is available to current NHASP members at a special reduced rate as a membership benefit. It is appropriate for practitioners at the elementary, middle, and high school level.
Learning Objectives
Participants in this professional development session will be able to:
- Outline the ethical considerations of conducting risk assessments in schools
- Discuss the role that school psychologists have in conducting risk assessments and being apart of school safety teams
- Identify different assessment tools and methods in order to conduct risk assessments in schools
- List the benefits and limits that risk assessments have in public school settings
- Discuss the different formats of completing risk assessments that are correlated to the purpose and procedures outlined by the school districts
